Invented in Russia

The History of Russian Inventive Thought from Peter I to Nicholas II

2017 · Popular science book

In numerous reference books and lists of Russian inventions, three quarters of the remarkable ideas produced by Russian inventive thought are usually omitted; instead, one discovers claims that we invented the aeroplane (certainly not), the bicycle (also no), and the ballistic missile (by no means). This book has two aims: first, to tell the story of inventions made at different times by our compatriots, with the greatest possible objectivity, neither understating nor exaggerating their achievements; second, to dispel the many myths and historical falsifications connected with the history of invention.

Invented in the USSR

Invented in the USSR

The History of Inventive Thought from 1917 to 1991

2019 · Popular science book

Inventive activity in the Soviet Union developed in a distinctive way. It was actively encouraged in selected fields—space, military, and scientific—while being largely neglected in everyday life. In other words, the USSR achieved major breakthroughs in rocketry and fundamental research, yet lagged significantly in everything related to daily life, from vacuum cleaners to automobiles. This book has two aims. The first is to present, as objectively as possible, the inventions created by our compatriots during the Soviet period, neither understating nor exaggerating their achievements; the second is to place Soviet inventiveness in a broader context that explains its distinctive path. And, of course, to dispel the many myths surrounding the history of invention.

The History of Armenian Inventive Thought

Popular Science Book. Moscow: Slovo, 2024. ISBN 978-5-387-02038-4.

Having found himself in Armenia by a twist of fate, the author discovered that Armenians, contrary to a popular joke, are not “the first in everything,” yet have indeed made a significant contribution to many areas of human life. Skorenko, true to his meticulous approach to information, set out to determine what Armenians had actually invented and to present it in a light and engaging manner.

Who invented the accordion? Who built the first Mars rover? Who developed the coffee vending machine? Who, and how, actually created the legendary green dye for US dollars, patented the handheld hairdryer, or, say, cultivated the orchid that became a symbol of Singapore? What is myth, and what is the plain truth? The book tells the story of inventors of Armenian origin who, due to historical circumstances, were scattered across the globe—from Soviet Armenia to the United States, France, Austria, and Singapore.

Popular Mechanics

2018 · Popular science book

This book was created with the direct participation of the editorial team of the magazine “Popular Mechanics” and is based on its materials. “PM,” as is well known, is a magazine about how the world works. We should always remember that it does not arrange itself—it is we, people, who build cars, create spacecraft, construct buildings, and develop computers. We hope that this book will inspire you and your children to continue shaping the world around you, and that we, the editors of “Popular Mechanics,” will always have something to write about.

I served as the book’s editor and compiler, wrote the introductions to the sections, and also authored the chapters “Nothing Is Impossible,” “The Beauty of Harmony,” “Financial Pyramids,” “The Battle of the Eiffels,” “A DIY Camera,” “The Bright Room,” “Jurassic Cinema,” “A Dream from a Machine,” “Music in Glass,” “Fire Tornado,” “Don’t Play with Batteries,” “Burning Air,” “Flame in a Bottle,” “A Paraffin Engine Instead of a Heart,” “Dry Out of Water,” “Secrets of White Powder,” “The Invisible Flask,” “Drawings on Milk,” “Catching Frozen Smoke,” “A Bubble in a Cube, or a Soap Tesseract,” “Concentric Bubbles,” “Pressing Sheet Metal,” “A Mug Pendulum,” “A Kitchen Foucault Pendulum,” “Needles and Coins,” “Lying on Nails,” and “The Art of Levitation.”

PR Me, If You Dare

A Guide for PR Specialists Written by a Journalist

Popular Science Book. Moscow: AST, 2019. Series: Runet Star. Business. ISBN 978-5-17-119376-8.

Books on PR are usually written by PR professionals. The problem is that almost none of them have ever been on the other side of the barricades—working in a magazine or on television, producing popular video blogs, or managing corporate social media accounts. As a result, conflicts between journalists and PR specialists arise constantly. Tim Skorenko, having spent ten years in journalism, decided to write a textbook on PR and explain the mistakes PR professionals make when working with the press and bloggers—and, conversely, the situations in which journalists themselves are in the wrong in their dealings with PR departments.

The World of Mechanic Kulibin

The World of Mechanic Kulibin

The Man Who Could Do Everything

2025 · Popular science book for children

Who was Ivan Kulibin? What did he invent, and what became of his inventions? Ivan Kulibin was a great mechanic and inventor, a self-taught genius whose name eventually became a household word. Yet if you try to recall what exactly he invented, at best you might think of the Peacock Clock in the Hermitage (which he did not build, but merely repaired). In this book, we aim to tell the true story of the famous master. Kulibin devised many remarkable inventions that were ahead of their time. Here you will read about his searchlights and watercraft, bridges and prosthetics, a self-propelled carriage and a screw lift. We invite you to embark on a journey through time and experience what it was like to be a self-taught genius during the Industrial Revolution in Russia.

People of the World: The Russian Scientific Diaspora

People of the World: The Russian Scientific Diaspora

Editor and compiler: Dmitry Bayuk

Popular science book. Moscow: Alpina Non-Fiction, 2018. ISBN 978-5-91671-766-2.

“People of the World” is a book not simply about emigration, but about Russian scientists and engineers who realised their talents abroad. The tragic events of the twentieth century forced millions of our compatriots to leave their homeland. Yet the history of the Russian scientific diaspora extends beyond the traditional chronology of the waves of Russian emigration, as part of the intellectual elite had already left the country in the years 1895–1915. A powerful wave of emigration followed the Revolution; some scientists, such as the renowned theoretical physicist George Gamow, managed to escape the USSR during the years of Stalinist terror, while others, like the cosmologist Alexander Vilenkin, broke through the “Iron Curtain” during the period of stagnation. Many of the book’s protagonists, for example the engineers Igor Sikorsky and Vladimir Zworykin, received well-deserved recognition in the West; however, in their homeland, the names of most of these outstanding émigré compatriots were unjustly consigned to oblivion. This book is an attempt to restore them to history.

Contributors: Alexander Allakhverdyan, Andrey Vaganov, Gennady Gorelik, Vladimir Gubailovsky, Elena Zaitseva (Baum), Olga Orlova, Anton Pervushin, Irina Ponomaryova, Tim Skorenko, Sergey Yastrebov.

For People of the World, I authored the chapters “A Light in the Window: A Brief History of the Light Bulb” (on Pavel Yablochkov and Alexander Lodygin), “Russian Wings: Aviation in Exile” (on Igor Sikorsky and Alexander Prokofiev-Seversky), “Yurkevich’s Bulbous Bow: A Maritime Story,” “The American Father of Video Recording: Alexander Poniatov,” and “Vladimir Zworykin: The Patent War.”

For fifteen years, the magazine “Popular Mechanics” has been published in Russia, becoming the country’s leading popular science periodical. “Weapons” is one of the magazine’s most popular sections. To ensure that each issue features articles on modern types of weaponry, PM correspondents visit defence enterprises, interview designers, spend time with military personnel, and work on remote testing grounds. This book includes only a small selection of the articles that PM has devoted to military topics, but they nonetheless represent a broad range of subjects related to weapons and military technology.
