Popular Mechanics Portal

2015–2018
Editor-in-Chief

From March 2015 to August 2018, I headed the editorial team of the Popular Mechanics portal. In addition to Popular Mechanics, I created a number of projects for other online platforms, although the main part of my digital portfolio is associated specifically with PM.

Relaunch of the Popular Mechanics portal

On 10 May 2017, we completely relaunched the portal with a new design and functionality. The version of the portal launched before my arrival in 2014 was extremely inconvenient for both users and the editorial team, had an outdated design, and did not allow for publishing longreads, limiting both authors and readers. Work on the new website was carried out from autumn 2016 to spring 2017.

Increase in Popular Mechanics portal traffic

Over three years, the portal’s key metrics more than tripled from 1,587,364 to 5,153,558 unique users per month. The statistics shown correspond to March 2015 (my first month of work) and March 2018:

Editorial team structure

As of March 2015, the Popular Mechanics portal had three staff members: an editor-in-chief, one news writer, and a content manager. Over three years, the editorial team tripled in size: by the time I left in August 2018, in addition to the editor-in-chief, it included three full-time and two freelance news writers, a freelance rankings/features writer, a special projects manager, and a content manager. The portal’s advertising department also doubled in size.
