Kaspersky Adaptive Online Training (KAOT) Project

2020–2024
Content Team Leader, Chief Project Editor, Course Author

General Overview

The adaptive information security awareness programme Kaspersky Adaptive Online Training (KAOT) is a training course based on the principles of adaptive learning. The adaptive learning methodology is an intelligent approach that makes it possible to tailor the learning process to the learner’s abilities, knowledge, and confidence in their own preparation. The course continuously analyses the learner’s level of knowledge and adjusts the learning path depending on what information is needed at any given moment. At present, the course consists of 9 topics:

  • Passwords and accounts
  • Email
  • Websites and the Internet
  • Social networks and messengers
  • PC security
  • Mobile device security
  • Protection of sensitive information
  • GDPR
  • Personal data

The platform is multilingual and has been translated into 7 languages: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Arabic, and Turkish. The range of supported languages is continuously expanding. During localisation, cultural specifics of each region are taken into account (that is, not a literal translation but adaptation of content, including both text and visuals).

Each topic consists of 10–15 lessons, divided into four levels of difficulty. Each lesson is devoted to a particular subtopic and consists of a set of interactive slides—both instructional and assessment-based.

The total volume of material presented on the KAOT platform is approximately 450,000 words.

My Role in the Development of KAOT

Overall content development management

Since October 2019, I have led the team responsible for developing all KAOT content.

Content authoring

I personally authored the following topics for the platform:

  • Passwords and accounts: 11 lessons
  • Social networks and messengers: 14 lessons
  • PC security: 12 lessons
  • Mobile device security: 16 lessons
  • GDPR: 10 lessons
  • Personal data: 13 lessons

Under my supervision, the topics “Email,” “Websites and the Internet,” and “Sensitive Information” were also developed. I carried out scientific and editorial review of all platform topics.

Editing of platform interface texts

The KAOT project is based on the adaptive learning platform Area9 Lyceum. I carried out editorial review of the platform’s interface texts for the Russian localisation; this editing is also used in other Area9 Lyceum projects.

Educational Materials

Each lesson in the KAOT platform consists of 20–40 slides. Some slides are informational in nature, while others check whether the learner has absorbed the material presented on the informational slides. Thus, the system does not rely on testing at the end of a module or level, but evaluates the learner’s level of competence directly during the learning process. In accordance with their level of knowledge, as well as the degree of confidence in their answers, it adjusts the learning path.

In addition to the KAOT project, I have also implemented several smaller-scale local projects on the Area9 platform.
